THE dawn of 2005 was extra- special for Huddersfield couple Robert and Margaret Hawkins - it marked their 50th wedding anniversary.

The couple, of Springwood Hall Gardens, celebrated their golden wedding on New Year's Day.

The couple were introduced by friends at a party and were married at Kirkheaton Parish Church.

After the wedding they lived at Linthwaite, but soon moved to Edgerton.

Mrs Hawkins, 74, was a teacher at Milnsbridge Junior School.

She left teaching to have a family and then went back to teach at Reinwood Junior School, Oakes. She later returned to the Milnsbridge school - by then known as Cowlersley Primary School - before retiring 20 years ago.

Mr Hawkins, 73, ran a family firm which made pipe sealants.

It later became known as Hawk Jointing and he worked there until retiring in 1992.

The couple are both active community workers.

Mr Hawkins was a founder member of Colne Valley Round Table. He left 33 years ago when he hit the maximum age of 40.

He was also a founder member and former president of Huddersfield Pennine Rotary.

He is still in the organisation.

Mr Hawkins also spent 16 years in the 5th Duke of Wellington's Territorial Army regiment.

Mrs Hawkins was chairwoman of Huddersfield Ladies' Circle, a group for women aged 18 to 45 which promotes socialising and community work. It used to be just for wives of Round Table members, but now is open to anyone.

Both Mr and Mrs Hawkins are members of Kirkwood Hospice's Marsh, Edgerton and Gledholt support group.

Mr Hawkins is treasurer.

The couple have two children.

Alison lives in Huddersfield and has one daughter, Katie. Tim is in Brighton and has a daughter, Morwenna, and a son, William.

Mr and Mrs Hawkins are delaying their anniversary celebrations until January 22, because some relatives are holidaying in Australia.

They will enjoy a party at Huddersfield Golf Club, Fixby.
