Project manager Will Valovin is used to funny looks as he pursues his hobby.

After all, how many men do you see carrying an ironing board and an iron into the freezing waters of a Pennine reservoir?

Welcome to the crazy, zany world of the Extreme Ironers.

Men like Will, of Brockholes, and his pal Julio Nunez, of Holmfirth, who think nothing of carting an ironing board into some wacky situations to take photographs.

Will, 40, admits it’s a bit daft but he enjoys the thrill of finding new and even dafter locations in which to try out the sport.

“I have seen videos of people skydiving while doing the ironing and that must be the ultimate.

“Others have run marathons while doing the ironing and although I’m a marathon runner and a triathlete, that must be a real challenge”.

Will has also roped in his children, Molly, 7, and George, 5, into the Extreme Ironing world but wife Sarah has so far resisted.

The sport, or art as some purists like to call it, is thought to have started in 1997 in Leicester when Phil Shaw decided to take his board out on a rock-climbing trip.

Since then people around the world have had a go and have posted their adventures on the internet.

There’s even an Extreme Ironing bureau with its own Facebook page.

Will said: “I saw it on the internet about three or four years ago and thought I’d give it a go.

“As a triathlete I have to train for the open-water swimming so I took my board up to Dovestone reservoir at Greenfield and had a go.

“Since then I have been in many waterways and taken photos.

“People always thought I was daft when they spotted me training for the triathlon swimming in Holme Styes reservoir at Holmfirth in February, and now they see me there with an iron.

“Molly has had a go as has George but Sarah has not got involved, even though she is into the swimming.

“A friend of mine, Julio, who is a doctor at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, has joined in and we keep coming up with more ideas as to where we can go.

“It’s all meant to be good fun”
