DEWSBURY high school students are set to take to the stage in an explosive new production.

Step Away Before He Explodes is an original one-act play that challenges the threat of extremism. It premieres today at Westborough High School. The story portrays a classroom drama with four students isolated by their misconceptions and intolerance towards one another. South Asian arts organisation Manasamitra commissioned Huddersfield poet and playwright Gareth Durasow to write and direct the play based on his experiences of working with student groups from three of Dewsbury’s high schools.

“Dewsbury is overshadowed by tensions between different ethnic groups, but if you take a look a great deal is being achieved there” Gareth said. “It’s a great place to tackle the issue due to the richness of the community.”
