TOWN hall bosses were this afternoon facing calls to adopt policies which support and encourage fair trade with the Third World.

Kirklees Council was being urged to ensure its own purchases are fair trade wherever possible and insist its suppliers adhere to similar policies.

Campaigners added that the council should raise awareness of the issues through educational and publicity materials.

Labour group leader Clr Mehboob Khan said: "Too often the farmer is living on or below subsistence level while the large international companies they have to trade with are making huge profits.

"The fair trade system allows more direct access to western markets giving more of the profits to the producer."
