FAITH groups must come together and work constructively on the needs of young people, a meeting in Huddersfield was told.

The issue has become more urgent since the July 7 suicide bombings in London, the audience heard.

Dr Nasim Hasnie, the retiring chairman of Huddersfield Interfaith Council, said: "We need to find positive ways of engaging our young people, with a view to making them more self-sufficient in today's British society.

"In order to remedy this situation we feel we must provide positive role models for our young people, so that they can feel that it is possible for them to succeed in British society."

Dr Hasnie was speaking at the interfaith council's annual meeting at Huddersfield Parish Church.

He added: "The time is just right for all of us - as individuals and members of faith communities who have been at the cutting edge of making a difference in professions and businesses - to come forward and make a positive impact to enhance and improve the social, economic and political conditions for all our youngsters."

The council's new chairman is Miss Kiran Bali.

Other officers are: vice-chairmen, Mr Inderpal Singh Randhawa and Mrs Nancy Solomons; secretary, Mr Robin Bowles; treasurer, Dr Hasnie.
