A 27-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly told a national newspaper he had been lined up to be the fifth London bomber was appearing in Leeds Magistrates' Court today.
Imran Patel is accused of falsely telling News of the World journalist Mazher Mahmood in Huddersfield that he had information relevant to the investigation into the bombings on July 7.
Patel was arrested by anti-terrorist police at his home in Dewsbury after the newspaper handed over information to officers.
The charge against Patel reads: "On October 20, 2005, at Huddersfield, you caused wasteful employment of the police by knowingly making Mazher Mahmood a false report tending to show that you had information material to a police inquiry."
At a previous hearing, a district judge granted an application for bail on condition that Patel lives at a specific address, not given in open court, and has his passport retained by West Yorkshire Police.
