PEOPLE aged over 65 in Calderdale and Kirklees suffer around 50,000 falls every year.

These falls are responsible for the biggest cause of hospital admissions for people aged 65 years and over.

Now people can get free help and advice next week from specialist healthcare staff on how to prevent falls.

Specialist NHS staff from the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust and Locala will be staging awareness sessions in the bus stations in Halifax, Huddersfield and Brighouse.

People will be able to have their blood pressure checked as sudden drops can often lead to a fall.

They can also get their walking aids checked over and stoppers replaced if necessary and be screened to check their risk for osteoporosis through a simple question and answer form. Advice on healthy lifestyles will also be available.

The Trust’s falls prevention assistant practitioner Nasreen Akhtar, said: “People tend to think falling is part of getting older but it isn’t.

“Falls can be prevented in many instances.”

The sessions are:

Tuesday, June 19, at Brighouse Bus station 10am to 1pm.

Tuesday, June 19, at Huddersfield Bus station 11am to 2.30pm.

Thursday, June 21: Halifax Bus Station 10am to 1pm.
