A MOTHER and three children were taken to hospital after a severe blaze badly damaged their home.

The fire broke out in the living room of the back-to-back terraced house at Blackhouse Road, Fartown, at 12.20pm yesterday.

All the children are aged under six and neighbours rushed to help get them to safety.

The inferno swept through the living room and up the stairs.

Huddersfield fire station watch manager Tony Bateman said: "The cause is being investigated, but it was a serious fire which gutted the living-room.

"The heat was so intense plaster fell off the walls and ceiling."

The rest of the house was smoke-damaged.

The mother and children were taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for precautionary check-ups.

They are thought to have breathed in smoke.
