A family of three and their pet dog had a lucky escape when their Mercedes car crashed 25ft down an embankment near Castle Hill.

The accident happened in Lumb Lane, Almondbury, at 1pm on Christmas Day when the Mercedes driver and another motorist tried to pass one another on the hill’s notoriously narrow roads.

Huddersfield Fire Station watch commander Shane Byrne said the family was fortunate to be driving in such a safe car as it absorbed much of the impact.

He said: “They were on their way down from Castle Hill and the other driver was going up.

“The 63-year-old driver of the Mercedes 320 and the other motorist have tried to pass each other at the same time and have basically run out of room.

“Once the nearside wheel has left the road it’s a sheer drop of perhaps 20ft-25ft and the car has tumbled down the embankment.

“They are lucky because the car has taken the brunt of the impact.

“The man and his 57-year-old wife and their 28-year-old daughter who was in the rear of the vehicle were trapped inside but we have managed to get them out and they were taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for a precautionary check.

“They had come up from Oxford and were visiting family in the Huddersfield area.

“The single male driver of the other vehicle suffered shock. He had just gone up there for a walk.”
