A FAMILY had a lucky escape after a firework set their home on fire.

The stray firework lodged in the guttering of the house in Newlands Court, Birkby, at 9.15pm on Saturday.

The family were unaware that the roof had caught fire and flames were spreading into the loft space.

They were alerted by a passer-by who spotted the smoke and flames on the roof.

The family had got out by the time Huddersfield firefighters arrived.

They contained the fire to the roof space and used a ventilator to clear the smoke from the house.
