FAMILIES in Kirklees are to benefit from a £559m cash boost for social housing and affordable homes.

The increase in funding for the Yorkshire and Humber region will start in 2010 and was announced by Housing Minister, Yvette Cooper.

She said: “Yorkshire and the Humber needs more affordable, decent homes not just own, but also to rent.

“We need more low-cost homes and more social homes and we need to work in partnership with housing associations and private developers to create mixed communities.

“Providing social housing for families and addressing the problems faced by first-time buyers is a top priority for this Government and the allocations show we are committed to this.”

Yorkshire and Humber Assembly Chairman, Peter Box, said the improved funding came after a delegation from the assembly travelled to Westminster to lobby for a fairer deal for the region.

The Regional Assembly will now put forward proposals for how the money is spent via the Regional Housing Board.
