A FAMILY have been saved from potential tragedy by their smoke alarm.

The device, fitted by West Yorkshire Fire Service, alerted a mother and two daughters to a blaze in their kitchen at Town Avenue near the Galpharm Stadium at around 7pm on Saturday.

Firefighters from Huddersfield and Brighouse spent 30 minutes tackling the fire.

The kitchen suffered smoke damage as a result of the fire, which was caused by a pan being left unattended on the stove.
