A MUM is still fighting for justice on what would have been her son Danny’s 21st birthday.
Today Danny Atkinson’s mum Linda Adams and his two sisters Leander, 16, and Paige, 8, will visit his grave to leave special presents and messages for him.
The family members want to tell Danny how much they miss his “bright, happy smile” and that they are still fighting to find out what killed him.
Paige has got her big brother a white fluffy teddy bear for him to cuddle in heaven.
And Linda said: “We only wish Danny was here to celebrate with us.”
Danny died alongside his friend Jade Rice in a car crash three years ago. They were both just 17.
Next week is crunch time for Danny and Jade’s families when they will hear whether the Attorney General has decided to prosecute the driver of the car that crashed at Bradley Road, Bradley, on January 29, 2006.
The families have been campaigning for justice for three years and want answers about what happened.
A dangerous driving charge against Mohammed Tanwir was never heard in court due to insufficient evidence presented by the Crown Prosecution Service.
But a Huddersfield inquest into the teenagers’ deaths returned a verdict of ‘unlawful killing’.
Danny and Jade, of Halifax, were living in Aspirations’ accommodation, designed to support young people leaving local authority care.
The driver of the car, Mohammed Tanwir, was employed as a ‘sleep in’ worker at the time at an address in Sherwood Avenue, Bradley. This involved him staying at the house to ensure health and safety and to act as a ‘good neighbour’ to the young people there.
Linda, from Wakefield, and Jade’s mum Elaine Noble light a candle every night and say a prayer.
Danny’s sister Leander, 16, said: “Daniel was our big brother who was full of life and always had a smile on his face for me and his baby sister Paige.
“Daniel could always make me smile whenever I was upset.
“I only wish he was here with us now on this special day of his to celebrate with us.
“We miss you so much Daniel.
“We love you and always will love you. We think about you all the time.”
Linda said she could not put into words how much she misses her only son.
“Our home hasn’t been the same without him. I would like to thank all those people who have supported myself and Jade’s family throughout the years since Daniel and Jade were taken from us.
“So today I would like people to think of Daniel with that smile he would have given us if he could have been with us today.”
