A SALE at Meltham to help tsunami victims made an incredible £6,500.

Organisers today paid tribute to the generosity of well-wishers.

Denise Yeadon, who chairs Meltham Churches Together, said: "It went unbelievably well and was wonderful."

The bring and buy sale - entitled A Sale For Tsunami - was held at Meltham Parish Church Hall yesterday.

Members of churches and Meltham's Crossroads charity project helped at the event which attracted 300 people.

Mrs Yeadon arranged the sale after being moved by TV coverage of the devastation caused by the Indian Ocean tidal wave, which struck on Boxing Day.

She said: "I decided I had to try and do something."

Meltham newsagent Hutsons delivered 600 leaflets to help publicise the event, which was also previewed in the Examiner.

Money will go to the Tsunami Appeal Fund.

The £6,500 total is still rising and more donated goods will be sold at the Crossroads shop in Meltham this week.
