PLANS for a huge festival of light and music in Huddersfield town centre are nearly complete.

Visitors to the free festival in St George's Square on November 18 will be in for a surprise when The Tower of Light arrives.

The production, by Manchester theatre company Walk The Plank, is described as an extravaganza of lights, beams, fire and fireworks.

As part of this, a tall metal lighthouse will be put up in the square and be the focal point.

The performance will culminate in a huge fireworks display from behind the railway station.

There will also be music specially commissioned for the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, which runs from November 19 to 28.

Tony James, marketing manager for Kirklees Cultural Services, said: "There will be something for everyone on November 18. We feel the main event, The Tower of Light, is going to be a spectacular event, the like of which the area will never have seen.

"This is part of a series of events for all the family to start the festive season with a bang," he added.

"In the week leading up to the festival, the landmark Victoria Tower at Castle Hill will be bathed in coloured lights, with a searchlight placed on the hilltop, turning it into a giant lighthouse looking over Huddersfield."

People were treated to a light show this month, when a test run was held at the Victoria Tower.

November 18 will also see the switching on of Huddersfield's Christmas lights on the Piazza at 6.15pm.

"Visitors can then follow Santa Claus through the town to the Kingsgate shopping centre for its switch-on at 7pm and the opening of Santa's Grotto," said Mr James.
