A Fartown family were left shocked after an air rifle pellet was fired through a bedroom window.

Fortunately no-one was injured but father-of-three Wayne Brett fears for the safety of his children, particularly in the school holidays when they are more likely to play outside.

Huddersfield Neighbourhood Police are investigating the incident which happened in Clara Street last night and are stepping up patrols to reassure the community.

Mr Brett said: “We were in the house last night and it was just after 10pm.

“We turned off the downstairs lights and went upstairs to bed. I had just closed the bedroom curtains when there was a noise, a crack.

“A bullet or pellet had smashed through one panel of the double glazed window but did not break the other panel.”

Mr Brett, who is father to Ryan, 16, Stephanie, 11 and eight-year-old Jade, contacted the police who attended and are now investigating the incident.

He added: “The police came round and said they believed it was either a pellet gun or an air rifle.

“I’m very worried. I don’t want to be in a situation where I have to keep the kids indoors.”

And he is unsure whether things have escalated from pranks by a group of youths.

“Over the last few days there have been a group of youths, aged probably from 13 to 16, hanging round outside,” he said.

They kicked our front door and have thrown water bombs at the house.

“Those are pranks but this was something far more worrying.”

Insp Jon Dunkerley, of Huddersfield Police, said: “We are aware of an incident of damage at an address in Fartown yesterday evening and this is being investigated.

“Indications are that an air rifle pellet caused damage to an upstairs bedroom window and we would urge anyone with information about this matter to get in touch.

“We believe that this is an isolated incident and officers will be continuing patrols in the area in the coming evenings to reassure the public.”
