A man ripped his police cell blanket after being held there for 19 hours.

Abdul Berbri, of Hammond Street in Fartown, appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

He pleaded guilty to criminal damage at Huddersfield Police Station on November 2.

Magistrates heard that the 32-year-old was in custody over a matter which was later dropped.

While he was in his cell Berbri was given a blanket and food.

However as the cell was being cleared out in preparation for another detainee, the custody sergeant noticed some damage.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman said: “He noticed that the edges had been ripped from the blanket.

“This was strewn on the floor in the toilet area.

“He was arrested for causing criminal damage and said: ‘I’m sorry, just give me a fine – I don’t want to go back into the cell.’”

John Ozyer, mitigating, said his client was in the cell for a lot longer than he was expecting.

He said: “He says the blanket was already damaged when it was given to him and the edging had already started unravelling.

“He’s accepted he’s caused further unravelling and damage when he’s been in there for that period of 19 hours.”

Magistrates gave Berbri a conditional discharge for 12 months. He was ordered to pay £10 compensation to West Yorkshire Police for the damaged blanket and £15 victim surcharge.
