A FARTOWN man stole from a taxi and then hurled sexual and racist abuse at police officers arresting him.

A court was told Patrick English threatened to rape the female officer and accused the other of being a terrorist when they apprehended him after the theft in Huddersfield town centre.

The 19-year-old was warned that he faced all sentencing options including custody when he appeared before the town’s magistrates yesterday.

The bench was told that on January 16 at just before 8pm, taxi driver Mohammed Iqbal parked on Brook Street and went into a takeaway.

Then English, of Willow Lane East, was seen ransacking the taxi minibus.

Linda Fowler, prosecuting, said: “While the defendant was in the taxi he removed a rucksack, money and removed the taxi radio causing damage. This was left on the floor still attached by the wires.”

Police officers found English further up the road sitting on a market stall. He was wearing the stolen rucksack on his back and traditional Asian dress.

Both of these items belonged to Mr Iqbal’s son.

As the two officers arrested English he became aggressive towards them.

Ms Fowler said English threatened the female officer with sexual violence and also subjected the male officer to racial abuse. living in London but then moved to Huddersfield to escape his associates. He said that on the whole his client had been able to keep away from the courts.

Mr Ali said: “He’s absolutely mortified at his behaviour and the only conclusion that he can reach is that the drink was talking.”

The case was adjourned to February 1 for a probation report.
