ONE of Huddersfield's foremost manufacturing firms faces an uncertain future today.

Directors of Glasgow-based engineering group Weir have launched a major review of the Birkby-based valves factory.

About 350 people work at the Britannia Works premises of Weir Valves and Controls. The former Hopkinsons Valves firm is one of Huddersfield's best-known businesses and still makes valves bearing the Hopkinsons name.

The wide-ranging review follows disappointing sales and profits from Weir's valves business in the UK.

A Weir spokeswoman said the review would consider a range of options for the site. It is expected to be completed before Weir unveils its half-year results in March.
