HOMEOWNERS can qualify for free planning applications for green developments.

Kirklees Council is waiving fees for environmentally-friendly measures like domestic wind turbines and solar panels.

This year’s budget included a Lib Dem measure allocating £10,000 to cover planning fees for such applications.

Clr Andrew Pinnock, the party’s regeneration spokesman, said: “The purpose of our budget proposal was to encourage people to think about renewable energy and draw attention to the potential for such features to be included in small projects.

“Enabling applicants to have a ‘free’ fee is one way of encouraging people to think about renewable energy when planning their projects.

“I hope more people will do so and do their bit to support the wider green agenda.”

The Conservative Cabinet member for regeneration Clr Ken Sims revealed there was just under £9,000 left in the pot.

He said: “So far we have had five applications qualifying for the fee of up to £300. This has taken up just over £1,000 in planning fees, so there is still plenty left.

“I encourage people to consider renewable energy aspects of any plans they have so they can benefit by having the planning fee covered.”
