A SOCCER player felled by a mystery object at the Galpharm Stadium had been taunting Town fans, it is claimed.

And the Brentford player's club has confirmed today that 21-year-old Jay Tabb is "absolutely fine."

The club spokesman was unable to say if there was any mark at all on the player and said he knew nothing about the claims he had been taunting Town fans.

The incident happened in the 83rd minute of the dramatic match when Tabb had been substituted with Brentford leading 2-1. They eventually lost 3-2 to Town.

Several fans have contacted the Examiner to say Tabb had been gesticulating the 2-1 scoreline at the time with his fingers.

He collapsed at the side of the pitch in front of Town fans in the John Smith Stand after apparently being hit in the face by an object.

The understanding is that nothing more than a plastic top from a coke bottle was found in the area.

Town are studying CCTV footage in an effort to find the culprit and have promised a lengthy ban for anyone found guilty.

The police have been informed about what happened and are awaiting a full report from Town after all the CCTV has been inspected.

Eyewitnesses suggest the top had been thrown by a young child.

Town fan Bob Knowles said: "In no way do I condone missile throwing of any kind towards players, physios or officials.

"Whoever threw objects in the direction of Jay Tabb should have a hefty ban and fine.

"However, I must express my concern at the incitement caused by the player himself who gleefully gesticulated the current score of 1-2 with his fingers towards the Huddersfield supporters in the John Smith Stand!

"Had this been Wayne Rooney it would have been plastered all over the TV and newspapers.

"This incitement must have been recorded.

"If so, the tapes should be sent to the FA along with any recording of the missile throwing so the player can also be banned and fined."

Chief Insp Dave Wormald, of Huddersfield police, said: "It is my understanding there are no injuries to the player.

"The investigation is still with the club and officials are liaising with us. This incident is being treated seriously and at this point we have no idea what hit the player, but an object of some description was thrown."

Anne Hough, Town Secretary, said: "The matter is being dealt with by the football authorities and we will be giving a full explanation to them."
