A female shop worker was forced to hand over cash in a terrifying knifepoint robbery at an Almondbury store.

The woman was left in a state of shock after a man using a scarf to disguise his face jumped over the counter at the One Stop Shop and grabbed her with the knife in his hand.

The horrific incident comes just eight months after a group of robbers threatened staff at the store with knives and machetes.

Police have described the latest armed robbery, which happened at 8.30pm on Saturday, as an ‘unnecessarily violent’ attack.

Two men entered the shop on Fernside Avenue as staff were getting ready to close the store for the evening.

Det Insp Andy Leonard from Kirklees CID said: “One of them was armed with a knife. He jumped over the counter, grabbed the female sales assistant and threatened her with the knife before making off with some money from the till.”

The man with the knife is described as white, 5ft 6in to 5ft 7in tall and of stocky build.

He was wearing a black scarf covering his face with a black hat, black coat and black jeans.

The second suspect is white and stocky.

He was also wearing a scarf covering his face and all dark clothing.

Another member of staff working in the back office managed to raise the alarm to police.

Det Insp Leonard said that it would have appeared as though the female worker was on her own to the men.

He urged witnesses to come forward, adding: “This was a totally unnecessary, violent attack on what really was a lone female member of staff.”

The store’s area manager described the staff member as being in a state of shock following the attack.

Last May the Examiner reported another robbery at the store.

On that occasion four men entered the shop demanding cash and threatened staff with knives and machetes.

Witnesses to the new incident are urged to contact Det Con Shaun Topham at Kirklees CID on 101.
