A HOME carer, who went the extra mile to help people trapped in the February snow, has been nominated for an award.

Despite suffering from arthritis, Carol Jones, 61, walked a seven-mile round trip in freezing conditions to help five clients in snowbound parts of Dalton, Waterloo, Kirkheaton, Lepton and Almondbury.

Now Carol, of Fenay Bridge, has been shortlisted for the Public Sector Worker of the Year award.

Dedicated Carol made sure the people, who had recently been discharged from hospital and had no family, friends or neighbours to help them, were comfortable, warm and properly fed.

She said: “Surprisingly, the combination of the cold weather and all that walking actually helped my arthritis.

“When I found out I’d been nominated I was shocked but absolutely delighted. I would like to say though that at the end of the day, it was a team effort.”

Ms Jones, who has worked for Kirklees Council since 1996, provides home care to help patients maintain their independence.

Carol was nominated by the domiciliary care co-ordinator Aneequa Ali for the Making a Difference Awards hosted by Local Government Yorkshire.

The awards celebrate outstanding achievements and contributions made by individuals and teams working in the region’s local authorities.

The awards winners will be announced on November 25.
