A HUDDERSFIELD sporting club formed in the mid-1970s are battling to keep afloat.

The Mary Hawdon Fencing Club, who are currently based at Royds Hall Sports Centre, are looking to boost their membership and as a result keep the club on its feet.

Bob Sharp, a spokesman for the club, said: “There are a number of adults and youngsters who regularly attend our Thursday evening sessions, but the membership is probably now only around 20.

“The club is finding that it is becoming a struggle to meet with the costs of our training sessions at the hall.

“While we are not in imminent trouble, we are now beginning to use the savings the club has accumulated and what we ideally want to do is boost membership.”

The club was formed in the 1970s by Elland-based Mary Hawdon, a qualified coach who competed at national level.

They had their first home at Salendine Nook before moving to Cambridge Road baths, Paddock Methodist Church and eventually to their current home in Paddock at Royds Hall in 2003.

Currently the club – which also has fencers entering competitive events with Jenny O’Sullivan and Shannon Sweeney both active epee competitors – has two qualified coaches in David Beeston and Frances Woodward.

And they are hoping that free taster sessions may just help attract more people into the sport and to the club.

“It really is a good fitness work-out,” said Mr Sharp.

“Particularly for the legs and lower body physically, but also in being mentally sharp and alert – it really is like physical chess.

“We are hoping that people will come and give fencing a try and all the equipment needed will be provided by the club for beginners.”

The club meets on Thursday from 7.30pm and with three pistes available beginners should get a good chance to try out the sport.
