Huddersfield students have heard the sweet sound of success after winning places in the final of a renowned music festival.

Four diverse groups from Kirklees Music School (KMS) will bring music to the audience’s ears as they battle it out for a top spot at the National Festival of Music for Youth in July.

The Kirklees Youth Symphony Orchestra (KYSO), Holme Valley Junior Strings, Colne Valley Senior Strings and the KMS Soul Band could be in with a chance of playing at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall as part of the event, which will take place in several venues around the city over three weeks.

The achievement is the latest good news for KYSO, who were asked to play at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Schools’ Prom in 2012 and will be the first time in the competition for KMS, a group of 20 musicians who share a passion for soul music.

The Colne Valley Senior Strings, who will be performing at the festival for the third time, will showcase three choreographed pieces from memory and will be joined by the 40 members of the Holme Valley Junior Strings, who are all aged under 14.

Principal of KMS and music director of the youth orchestra, Thom Meredith, said: “We are delighted that so many of our ensembles have been invited to take part in this widely acclaimed event.

“We have enjoyed our past performances in Birmingham immensely, and I’m sure this year’s festival will be an experience our young musicians will never forget, particularly those taking part for the first time.”

“The success of our ensembles is a reflection of the quality and diversity of music making here in Kirklees.”

Rehearsals for the groups take place each week at the school’s different centre.

KYSO train every Wednesday evening and the KMS Soul Band every Tuesday evening at the Netherhall Learning Campus in Rawthorpe.

Colne Valley Senior Strings meet at Colne Valley High School each Friday night and Holme Valley Junior Strings play at Holmfirth High School on Saturday mornings.
