WHAT’S the chances of them heading straight for the cheese counter?

Famous animated duo Wallace and Gromit are to “star” in a special festival promoting Kirklees’ markets.

The pair will be making a sortie over the Lancashire border in August to mark the completion of Dewsbury Market’s £2.4million refurbishment.

And they are also to be calling in at Huddersfield’s open market and Queensgate Market Hall.

Wallace and Gromit will be in Dewsbury on Wednesday, August 4.

Dewsbury Market was the winner of the national Market of the Year in 2007 and now the open market and semi-covered stalls have been restored to improve facilities for traders and shoppers.

The famous pair will be appearing at approximately 10am, 11am, 12.30pm, 2pm and 3pm, and will no doubt be sampling some of Yorkshire’s best cheese.

As well as the character appearances, Mr McWhitty will be performing balloon magic from 10am until 3pm, with live music from Jazz Impressions also from 10am until 3pm.

Clr David Sheard, Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Dewsbury Market is the largest open market in the North and one of the best markets in the country and this recent work will ensure it continues to be so.

“I am delighted to see the completion of the work and hope that shoppers come down to see the improvements and enjoy the celebrations at Dewsbury Market and at every one of our markets during the week ahead.”

The events at Dewsbury Market are part of a week-long celebration of Kirklees markets.
