DON’T let debt cripple Christmas.

That’s the message from South Kirklees Citizens’ Advice Bureau and the Castle and Minster credit union.

CAB chief executive Mark Lacey said: “Most of us will have less money available this Christmas for spending, thanks to higher fuel bills, mortgage rate increases and council tax commitments.

“Think before you get carried away with a Christmas spending spree and avoid starting the new year with unwanted Christmas debt.”

Debt advice is now the most common issue that CAB deals with.

Tips for avoiding money problems include:

Plan what you can afford and stick to it; avoid doorstep lenders and store credit; avoid unauthorised overdrafts; and be aware that your fuel bill will be higher in winter.
