THEY might look like junk to some people, but the likes of old newspapers, plastic bottles and cake cases have been used to create some very festive displays.

Members of Hepworth Church have been busy transforming their trash to tinsel to create Christmas trees.

The quirky designs, which have been lovingly crafted by local groups and individuals, were on display at the church at the weekend.

The imaginative creations included a tree made out of strips of plastic bottles and a ‘Techno tree’, constructed from copper pipes, a circuit board and digital photo frame.

There was a ‘cupcake tree’, and a tree with mince pie foil cases and umbrella spokes for branches.

Groups including the local school, badminton club, knitters and the Community Association were involved with the project.

Some of the trees will remain in the church over Christmas and money raised from the event will go towards church funds.

John Blunden, a member of the church council, said: “Every Christmas members put on some display as many churches do. In the past we have different ideas and this year we had the idea of a tree display made from recycled material.

“They have been made by individuals and small groups and are very creative.”
