A TOTAL of 125 candidates will be bidding for seats on Kirklees Council on May 3.

Nominations closed yesterday for the 23 wards up for grabs.

There are likely to be fierce contests in many of the seats.

The council's three main parties - Conservative, Labour and Lib- Dem - will face opposition from the British National Party in every ward.

The Greens will be contesting all the wards except one.

And there are other fringe candidates, including independent Mel Mills, the leader of a parents' group fighting to save threatened nurseries in Huddersfield.

The Save Huddersfield NHS group is fielding a candidate in Crosland Moor, after Clr Jackie Grunsell's success last year.

And Boney Maroney is making her swansong as deputy leader of the Monster Raving Loony Party.

See tomorrow's Examiner for a full list of all the candidates fighting for a seat.
