THE fight is on to get a state-of-the-art treatment for a nine-year-old with an aggressive cancer.

Cowlersley Primary School pupil Pierce White-Carter has neuroblastoma, which affects the nervous system so travels to many parts of the body.

Mum Rebecca and dad Dominic were told last week that his latest round of chemotherapy had failed.

They are now hoping that proton therapy in America, Germany or Italy will offer hope. One of the most precise forms of radiation treatment, it hits only the tumour leaving surrounding health tissues and organs intact.

After reading about Pierce, aged nine, in the Examiner, the organisation Families Against Neuroblastoma (FAN) has offered its support to the family.

Director Linza Corp lost her 17-month-old son Max to the disease in 2009.

She said: “We contacted saying we were aware they were trying to fundraise, we can help them with a charity account and we organise events for the families.

“In terms of the number of people affected we have a fan page with 1,000s of members from across the world, it’s one of the largest neuroblastoma communities and we also have a private area for families affected.”

She offered advice on setting up a charity page – bmycharity – which Pierce’s family have helped publicise via Twitter.

Mum Rebecca said: “My husband Dom has been doing it and we’ve sent it out on Twitter to loads of celebrities and they’ve been re-tweeting it.

“Twitter is helping us get the message out – people in Canada and American have made donations.”

The family are trying to raise £250,000 to fund the proton therapy as quickly as they can.

They raised just short of £1,300 at a charity event on Saturday at the Greenhead Masonic Hall.

For Pierce’s family, they’ve become semi-experts of his condition.

“We know more about his treatment and medication than some nurses, we’ve just had to learn everything,” Rebecca added.

“We want to understand everything and know what’s best for him, that’s why we’ve done the research on the proton therapy.”

You can contribute to Pierce’s fund by logging on to www.bmycharity.com and search for Pierce.

l Another fundraising event will take place at Deighton and Sheepridge Conservative Working Men’s Club on March 11 at 8pm.
