A FORMER Huddersfield student was the star of a Liverpool film festival - but she was behind the camera, not in front of it.

Karen McLeod, 22, from Fixby, directed a short film which was shown at the Eighth Liverpool Film Night at the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology.

The event - held twice a year - showcases up and coming film talent.

Karen, who studies drama at Edge Hill College of Higher Education in Lancashire, was one of eight directors who were chosen from 60 entrants to show their films.

Her film was based on Samuel Beckett's classic play Endgame. The eight-minute film juxtaposes war imagery, set to a menacing and intermittent soundtrack.

Karen, who is in her final year at Edge Hill which is affiliated to Lancaster University, said: "It's my first ever stab at directing, so it was a great thrill to have it screened at the festival.

"After the films were run the directors then had to field questions from the audience, which was quite nerve-wracking, though much of the feedback was positive."

After her degree, former Rastrick High School pupil Karen hopes to study for a master's degree in visual language of performance at the Wimbledon School of Art.
