Huddersfield's last town crying championships went ahead this weekend.

The quirky contest took place on Saturday in Nelson Mandela Corner behind Huddersfield Library.

The annual event has been running for 15 years but organiser and Huddersfield town crier Vic Watson said the event is unsustainable due to funding problems.

The event coincided with him turning 70.

He said: “It is just getting impossible to run due to the costs needed to stage it. We have struggled with sponsorship, have never received any help from the council and I’ve put a lot of money in myself.”

Contestants came from a cross the country to take part in the competition and they delighted shoppers in the town centre with their cries and their colourful costumes.
