Builders are putting the finishing touches to a new fire station at Rastrick.

The building in Clough Lane now has the traditional red doors associated with a fire station and construction of the training tower is under way on the site.

And West Yorkshire fire chiefs have confirmed they plan to host an open day in the near future to let local residents see the new facility.

The Rastrick station is set to replace the existing fire stations in Brighouse and in Elland, which were built in 1971 and 1965 respectively.

Andrew Crowther will be in charge of the crews based at the Rastrick station, which is expected to become operational next month

It is one of several new stations being brought into use by the West Yorkshire brigade.

They include a new one in Carlton Road, Dewsbury, which will replace the existing Dewsbury and Batley stations.

Good weather over the past few weeks has meant the building work there is ahead of schedule and it is expected to open in October..

A brigade spokesman said of the Rastrick project: “The building is now looking like a fire station!

“The new training tower can be seen in the background and the engine bay doors are now fitted to the front and rear.

“Behind the scenes, the selection process for firefighters to work at the new station has been completed and work is beginning to order furniture for the new building.

“Around the time the new station opens, we will be holding an open day so local residents can visit their new neighbours.”

The siting of the new station at the junction of Clough Lane and Slade Lane has been chosen for its good access to Elland, Brighouse, the M62 and surrounding areas.

The new station will be staffed by a crew of five firefighters, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. The crew are one of West Yorkshire’s specialist water rescue and flood response teams.
