More than 50 West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue fire fighters from across the country attended a major blaze on Huddersfield Road in Mirfield on Saturday evening.

The fire was at a car dealership near Stocks Bank Road and sparked at around 8.30pm.

The crews were called to the garage premises of Mirfield Prestige and West Riding Jaguar, next to Kenmore Caravans. with up to nine fire engines and emergency vehicles attended the scene.

Thankfully, no-one has been injured in the blaze, although many vehicles at the dealership forecourt have been badly damaged.

Witnesses told the Examiner that it was believed the fire started on the forecourt, possibly in one of the motorhomes parked there.

Residents raised the alarm after hearing explosion noises, thought to be gas bottles.

The road remains closed between Stocks Banks Road and the Three Nuns junction.

Resident speaks of seeing the flames

Samantha Wood who lives opposite the site said her daughter first alerted her to the blaze last night.

She said: “It was about 8.30pm and a friend was dropping my 18-year-old daughter, Katie Evans off.
“Katie said ‘there’s some smoke’ over there but at first I just thought it was someone burning some rubbish. But five minutes later there was a flash and we knew something was happening.”

Jaguar owner says business not affected too badly

David Bye, managing director of West Riding Jaguar, one of two car companies, based at the site, has spoken to us. He said: “Luckily the fire was in the opposite end of the building and has not affected our business too much apart from some smoke damage.

“I got a phone call from a friend of my wife’s and we managed to move about 30 cars off the forecourt so that took a lot of the danger away and the firefighters were able to contain it to the other part of the building.

“It is Prestige Motors who share the site with us which has had some vehicles destroyed. A caravan, two motor homes and half-a-dozen cars including a couple of BMWs.
“No-one knows at the moment how it started but the main thing is that no-one was hurt.”
