INVESTIGATORS have not yet determined the cause of the massive blaze at the home of Huddersfield eccentric Jake Mangel Wurzel.

Flames engulfed the Peat Ponds property off Lindley Moor Road on Monday evening.

Jake was not injured in the fire but a section of the roof collapsed and it is thought the inside of his home was gutted.

Yesterday firefighters returned to the scene to make the property safe and investigate what sparked the blaze.

Huddersfield Fire Station Manager Chris Kirby said the intense fire had been fuelled by a ruptured gas cooker and boiler.

He said: “Roughly 50% of the property was involved in the fire.

“There was a considerable flow of gas which is one of the reasons why the fire was so intense.

“We’ve had engineers from utilities companies out and they have dug down and capped off the gas.

“Structural engineers then went in to make sure the property is safe and our fire investigation team is currently looking into the cause of the blaze.”
