FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle a blaze at a house set for demolition.
The derelict property at Wakefield Road, Moldgreen, is one of several to be pulled down to make way for a multi-million pound development at Poplar Street and Gelder Terrace.
It was badly damaged when a blaze ripped through it at around 8.30pm on Friday night.
Fire crews from Huddersfield and Elland spent three hours tackling the fire, believed to have started in an upstairs bedroom before spreading up to the roof. The cause of the fire is unknown.
The property was empty, but it is believed that a vagrant had been living there. Police are said to be looking for the man.
The small estate was built in 1914 for workmen on the site of the old Moldgreen gasworks.
Last year the green light was given for a £4.5m eco-friendly flats scheme to be built there.
However, the credit crunch led to the scheme being put back.
