Firefighters had to tackle a blaze at a Kirklees school last night.

Police are treating the cause of the fire, in a classroom at Whitcliffe Mount School, Cleckheaton, as suspicious.

A passer-by saw the fire and called the emergency services at about 11.30pm last night.

Firefighters gained access through windows at the school and quickly had the blaze under control.

But there was considerable smoke and heat damage to the classroom.

The school was expected to open as normal today, with the classroom sealed off.

Police are investigating.
