A HUNDRED fish have died because of the heatwave.

The fish died at a pond in Wilton Park in Batley because of low oxygen levels in the water during the recent warm weather.

West Yorkshire Fire Service pumped oxygen into the pond on Friday.

Kirklees Council parks divisional manager Tom Raper said: “I approached the fire service who, as a one-off goodwill gesture, said they would try to improve the oxygen levels in the pond.

“Our staff are removing as many dead fish as possible and we are continuing to work closely with the Environment Agency to monitor the situation.

“We apologise for any distress caused to the visiting public but every effort is being made to prevent further fish losses.”
