SEVEN fire stations were caught in a blaze of glory as they received cash prizes for good driving records.

The West Yorkshire fire service makes annual awards to stations and safety teams whose records are blemish-free.

Huddersfield, Mirfield, Holmfirth, Slaithwaite, Elland, Dewsbury and Cleckheaton stations will each be given £150.

Nick Sutcliffe, the Slaithwaite station manager, said he was pleased he had safe and well-trained drivers among his staff. He added: “Hopefully the money will benefit the whole station.

“It pays testament to the standard of training and instructing.

“By rewarding the station it is also going to benefit the public.”

The cash is usually spent locally on fitness training equipment for firefighters.

The scheme is self-financing, from savings in their vehicle repair budget.

Crews are not penalised for damage caused when they are responding to emergency calls.
