FIREFIGHTERS dealt with a fierce blaze after a suspected arson attack on a property in Birkby.

The inside of a garage was completely destroyed following the blaze at Heathdale Avenue on Friday evening.

Firefighters spent an hour battling the flames and smoke, which they described as being visible from the town centre.

Police also attended at the scene and are still investigating.

Two crews from Huddersfield Fire Station were called to the semi-detached house at just before 9pm.

A fire station spokesman said that their initial efforts to reach the house were hampered by bad parking on the road.

He said: “We were delayed getting there because of the parking on the street.

“There was some double-parking so we had to blast our horn until one of the vehicles was moved so that we could get past.”

When firefighters arrived at the house they found a detached garage well alight.

The spokesman said: “We could see the smoke from the town centre – it was quite a fire.

“The garage was being used for general storage and also as a bit of a games room as there was a pool table in there.

“The roof stayed intact but the inside was completely destroyed.”

Firefighters at the scene also had to look after an adjoining garage belonging to a neighbour, as the fire had started to damage some of the guttering.

Although the crews were called first, police were close behind and are understood to have arrested a suspect soon afterwards.
