FIREFIGHTERS were called after an elderly man threw his cigarette into a bin without putting it out.

The crew from Batley attended the man’s house at Commercial Street in Heckmondwike at 8.30pm on Saturday.

They were alerted to the incident by the Careline alarm service, which was linked to the smoke detector.

The man had believed that the ringing was his hearing aid but staff told him this was not the case.

He managed to extinguish the lit cigarette himself but firefighters were automatically called to his home.
