INADEQUATE and insufficient training is compromising firefighters safety, says a union.

Many want an end to cuts in frontline personnel and feel the government does not value them.

The Fire Brigades Union says government proposals to create eight new fire control rooms for the whole country will make the service respond less well to incidents, and make firefighters less safe.

The FBU commissioned a YouGov poll of members. They were asked what were the four best ways of spending money on improving the fire and rescue service, eight out of 10 (81%) said more training, almost eight out of 10 (78%) said more frontline personnel, and seven out of 10 (71%) said modern and safe personal radios. Just one in 50 (2%) suggested moving to regional control centres.

YouGov interviewed 1,969 FBU members across the UK between August 4 and 14 this year, including 139 in Yorkshire and Humberside.
