FIREFIGHTERS were called to save a pregnant donkey from a pond. The frightened animal had fallen into the 3ft pond in its field off Chaster Street in Batley. The RSPCA were called, but officers were unable to get her out. Batley firefighters used a length of hose and dragged her free in about 10 minutes. Fireman Nigel Crabtree said: "In the end it took brute force to get her out. She had been in there some time and hypothermia was beginning to set in. We were quite worried." RSPCA inspector Dave Holgate said she was now recovering.
