A DRIVER had to be cut free by firefighters after a head-on crash in New Mill.

The man was trapped by his legs when his VW Sharon and a Peugeot 307 estate crashed on Sheffield Road about 500 yards from the Cragrats restaurant at 9am on Thursday.

Paramedics stabilised the VW driver while firefighters from Holmfirth rescued him.

Leading firefighter Richard Robinson said: "The force of the impact meant his knees and the lower half of his body were trapped against the dashboard.

"We used rams to push the dashboard back and then cut the door and post off and dismantled part of the chair to slide him out."

He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary suffering from serious leg injuries.

The other driver, a man from Yeadon, was also taken to HRI and later allowed home.

The road remained closed until 11am, causing major traffic tailbacks.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
