MORE than 20 firefighters tackled a serious blaze in Shelley.

Crews from Holmfirth and Skelmanthorpe were first called to Shelley Bank Abattoir on Near Bank in Shelley at 9.30am today and immediately called for back-up.

An aerial appliance was called in from Huddersfield as flames took hold of 40% of the building which is thought to be used as an animal crematorium.

Potentially dangerous oxygen and propane cyclinders are believed to have been caught up in the inferno.
