FIRE crews were called to a barn blaze at risk of explosion from several vehicles and gas canisters inside.

The alarm was raised shortly after midnight yesterday morning at the building in Cliffe Hollins Lane, East Bierley.

Fire crews were hampered in their efforts due to the nearest water main being located a mile- and-a-half away.

But despite this they managed to cool the LPG canisters and safely remove them. They also rescued a number of chickens from inside the barn.

Police were called to close the road.

The fire completely destroyed the barn which contained a number of agricultural vehicles.

Firefighters were on scene for five hours to ensure the site was safe.

Fire crews from Cleckheaton, Batley, Bradford, Odsal and Stanningley attended.
