FIRE crews have had to deal with a spate of garden bonfires.

People burning rubbish in Batley have found their fires quickly spread to nearby properties, garden sheds or trees.

One such incident happened on Monday at Oxford Road in Cleckheaton.

Batley fire station Watch Commander Andy Dickinson said: “If you’re burning rubbish make sure there’s no plastic of foam.

“People should not underestimate the radiant heat which comes from a fire and if it spreads to a tree they need to be careful.

“Conifers and pine trees have an oil in their greenery which means it can burn quickly and fast.”

He advised people not to set up a bonfire for burning rubbish near to any properties or garden equipment.
