A HUDDERSFIELD eye specialist has urged people to take extra care in the run up to this year’s Guy Fawkes celebrations to avoid firework accidents.
Keith Davey is consultant ophthalmologist at Yorkshire Eye Hospital and runs an eye clinic in Holmfirth.
He said: “Eyes can be especially vulnerable where fireworks and bonfires are concerned and care should be taken where adults and children are concerned.
“Eye damage caused by fireworks is often severe and can lead to reduced vision or even blindness.
“It is the simple rules that are the most effective guard against eye injury and common sense should prevail wherever you are, whether setting off fireworks yourself or if you are simply a spectator.
“Everything from the most humble sparkler to the most explosive of rockets can be extremely dangerous.”
