A TEENAGER is to appear in court charged in connection with an incident where a dog was blown up by a firework.

The 19-year-old from Linthwaite answered bail at Huddersfield police station yesterday where he was formally charged.

A firework was allegedly strapped to Yorkshire terrier Emmie and ignited on Gilroyd Lane, Linthwaite, on October 27.

The teenager was yesterday charged with outraging public decency and will appear before Huddersfield Magistrates on Friday, December 30.

Emmie belonged to Keith and Maureen Barrington who live in Linthwaite.

Mrs Barrington, 67, has already beaten stomach cancer once and is now recovering from lymphoma.

The couple were overwhelmed by the public's response to what happened to Emmie.

Mrs Barrington said: "Everyone has been so fantastic.

"We have had letters, cards and phone calls from all over the country from people wanting to express their condolences.

"All are very sorry to hear what happened.

"It is the sort of thing that makes you realise how supportive people can be."

The couple buried Emmie in the garden with her favourite toy.

Mrs Barrington said: "She was lovely, beautiful and so tiny.

Emmie was always with the couple.

They even took her to Leeds to comfort Mrs Barrington while she received chemotherapy.
