HUDDERSFIELD firms have been urged to apply for industry's top award.

Some 17 companies in the town have so far applied for the Queen's Award in 2006 - its 40th anniversary.

They join 110 organisations across West Yorkshire to bid for the annual prize.

The 14 winners in the region this year included contract furnishings company Interface Fabrics with operations in Meltham and Mirfield.

Companies have until October 31 to apply for next year's awards.

Stephen Brice, secretary at the Queen's Awards Office, said he was encouraged by the take-up in West Yorkshire.

But he urged others to follow the lead, stressing: "Unlike many business awards, the Queen's Awards for Enterprise recognise the contribution made by the whole workforce.

"Research shows that winning such a coveted award gives an unparalleled opportunity for a company to shine in national and international markets."
